‘Smart’ technology — a short story

We have a video doorbell thing (I know, worst liberal in the world). It lets us know when packages are delivered with push notifications. Which is the most unnecessary thing ever, because I work from home and barely leave the house. But it detects this when there’s small movement in front of the camera and then something there that isn’t normally there.

Yesterday, I took the boys to the park. (Out of the house! Rare!) My brother-in-law had a driver shaft for a golf club delivered. Tall box, delivery man leaned it up. That meant it was right in the view of the camera, and it was also fairly light and movable. Upshot? Every single small breeze moved the box just a little, which was picked up by the camera, which meant we got another notification.

Seriously, look at that. Just look at it.
